The Communist Party of India (CPI) and the CPI(Marxist) are the only parties to oppose the proposed methane extraction project in the Cauvery delta districts of Thanjavur and Tiruvarur, said K. Balakrishnan, MLA and CPI (M)’s central committee member, here on Wednesday.
He told presspersons that the previous DMK Government signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Great Eastern Energy Corporation for extracting methane in Thanjavur and Tiruvarur districts in January 2011.The then Deputy Chief Minister M.K. Stalin signed the MoU with company officials.
AIADMK Government passed a resolution in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly starting the project only two years after it came to power and that too after the Left parties launched various agitations against the project.
Not only on this issue, but on various issues such as the Cauvery water dispute, issues related to farmers and farm labourers, the Left parties spearheaded many movements and agitations and fought for them.
The CPI(M) has fielded S. Tamil Selvi, district secretary of All India Democratic Women’s Association, as the candidate for Thanjavur Lok Sabha constituency. He expressed the hope that the voters would support the CPI (M) which had been fighting for their issues.
Later, he attended a workers’ meeting where the candidate was introduced to the party cadres.
He said that Tamil Selvi is the daughter-in-law of Tyagi Venkatachalam, a distinguished leader of the party.
