A fourteen-year-old boy with a hole in his heart, a condition medically termed as atrial septal defect (ASD), found relief finally with an open heart surgery performed under the Chief Minster's Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme at a city hospital recently.

The operation was performed by a team of doctors from Dr.G.Viswanathan Specialty Hospital.

ASD is a birth defect where a lobe in the heart creates a hole between the right and left atrium of the heart. The patient was put on a heart-lung machine and the heart was made to stop. After surgical correction, the heart was set to pump again. A release issued by the hospital, on Monday, said 25 patients have registered for various cardiac procedures like by-pass surgery, valve replacement surgery and congenital heart surgery. Over 300 patients have benefited from various procedures performed under the scheme, in the hospital according to the release.
