Hostels run by schools and colleges in the city should set up incinerators immediately for the safe disposal of sanitary napkins and diapers, N. Ravichandran, Special Officer-cum-Commissioner, Tiruchi City Corporation, said on Wednesday.
Speaking at an awareness programme on Swachh Survekshan ranking 2018, which was attended by international chess player Jenithaa Anto, brand ambassador for the cleanliness drive of the civic body, Mr. Ravichandran said the incinerators would enable safe disposal of sanitary napkins and diapers on the premises itself.
A few apartments in the city had already set up incinerators, which were working well. The Corporation had reached out to welfare associations of residential apartments, and impressed upon them the need to establish incinerators. Similarly, women’s hostels in the city too had been asked to set up incinerators within a month. Otherwise, the Corporation would take action against them as per the rules.
Mr. Ravichandran said the Corporation would not hesitate to initiate action against those dumping garbage on the streets and in public places. The garbage should either be handed over to corporation vehicles or dumped in dustbins.
Marriage halls, hotels and restaurants that produced huge waste were asked to set up onsite compost yards to produce organic manure. Twenty-five marriage halls and restaurants had already complied. Another 25 private halls would do so shortly.
Recollecting her experiences of her visit to European countries to take part in international chess tournaments, K. Jennitha Anto said she was impressed by the way the citizens shouldered with their respective local bodies in keeping their cities and towns neat and clean. Each one of them displayed excellent civic sense in ensuring cleanliness.
She said she was happy to be the Swachh Ambassador of Tiruchi Corporation, which had been figuring in the top list of clean city ranking since 2015. Citizens of the city should cooperate with the Corporation by actively taking part in the clean city initiatives. It would enable Tiruchi city to become No. 1 in the clean city 2018 rankings.
Later, Mr. Ravichandran honoured M.S. Anitha, Dean, KAP Viswanatham Medical College, Tiruchi, and Samsudeen Begum, Joint Director of Health and Family Welfare, Tiruchi, with special awards for their contribution to dengue treatment and initiatives for prevention.
