In a first, transgender gets government driver job

A 37-year-old transgender of Sangiliandapuram in Tiruchi has been appointed as driver in a State government department. The appointment is said to be the first of its kind in the driver category in a State government department in Tiruchi district.

M. Sneha, who has more than 10 years of experience as driver with various private employers, will be with the Project Office of Rural Livelihood Mission.

Collector K. Rajamani handed over the appointment order to Sneha on Thursday.“I thank the Almighty for giving me the opportunity. It is a proud moment for transgenders. It will send a positive message to the members of our group,” Sneha told The Hindu .

Thanking the State government and officials, including the Collector and Joint Director B. Babu, for offering the job, Sneha said she would continue to work with the members of her group to persuade them to give up seeking alms.
