The Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT), which was inaugurated by Chief Minister Jayalalithaa through video conference from Chennai on Wednesday, is offering three post-graduate programmes to start with.

The IIIT will function temporarily from the Bharathidasan Institute of Technology (BIT) campus of the Anna University, Tiruchi, and have an in-take of 20 students in each of the three PG programmes - M.Tech in Computer Science and Engineering, M.Tech in Software Engineering and M.Tech in Database Systems.

The institute has been set up jointly by the Central and State governments and the industry under public-private partnership mode with the objective of catering to skilled human resource requirements in IT and other areas. TATA Consultancy Services, Cognizant Technology Solutions, Infosys, Ramco Systems, ELCOT and TAKE Solutions, are partnering the venture.

The institute is one of the 20 IIITs planned by the Centre across the country. In August 2011, Ms.Jayalalithaa announced in the Assembly that the IIIT will be set up in the Srirangam constituency.

The State government has identified 56.37 acres of land in Sethurapatti village of Srirangam taluk for constructing buildings for the Rs. 128 crore project. Construction of buildings for the institute is expected to commence soon.

At present, 47 students have joined the institute this academic year, admissions for which were made based on Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering and the Tamil Nadu Common Entrance Test scores.

The institute is likely to offer under graduate programmes in the coming years, sources said.

The Anna University will function as the mentoring institution of the IIIT and the Dean of BIT campus will be the Director (in-charge) until a permanent director is posted.
