Burglars broke into the house of a textile shop owner at V. Idayapatti near Kovilpatti and escaped with gold jewels and cash when the businessman was away on Sunday.

The offence came to light on Monday morning after the businessman’s aged mother staying in the upstairs came down only to find the household articles strewn inside and the valuables stolen.

Police sources said the textile shop owner N. Muthupandian (42) had left for Rasipuram to visit his mother-in-law’s house on July 16 along with his family. His mother Muthulakshmi stayed in the house. Muthulakshmi alerted her son.

Police said 129 sovereigns of gold jewellery and Rs. 30,000 were stolen from the house. The Valanadu police have registered a case.
