A presentation made by Perambalur Superintendent of Police Sonal Chandra was adjudged the best and won the first prize at a national conference for women police officers at Thiruvananthapuram a few days ago.
Over 150 women police from all over the country and from the para-military forces attended the two-day conference on “Gender Sensitisation and Empowerment of Women.”
The conference had diverse representation from constables to Superintendents of Police expressing their viewpoints and sharing their experiences at the meeting which featured deliberations on various themes centred on women police.
Speakers from different walks of life – lawyers, human rights activities, women activists, intellectuals, cyber crime experts, doctors and victims of crime also took part.
In the final session, presentations were made by delegates of various States with respect to best practices in their respective states.
There were 13 participants who deliberated on the above theme enumerating the positive measures taken by the respective States in respect of women police besides the efforts taken to mitigate crimes against women.
Ms. Sonal Chandra who represented the Tamil Nadu police made a presentation on “Tamil Nadu Police: Initiatives and Challenges with respect to women in police”.
The presentation highlighted various initiatives taken in Tamil Nadu for women police time-to-time including setting up of an all women battalion and a woman commando force and women helpline. It put across the fact that Tamil Nadu police had the unique distinction of having seven districts headed by woman Superintendents of Police – by far the highest percentage and number when compared to any other State in the country.
It elaborated on the Chief Minister’s 13-point programme with respect to crime against women and the initiatives taken by districts such as Perambalur in stopping child marriages and in mitigating crimes against women.
Kerala Chief Minister Oomen Chandy presented the first prize to Ms. Sonal Chandra at the conference, a press release here said.
