The computerised Health Management Information System (HMIS) will soon be extended to government medical college hospitals in the State, Health Minister C. Vijaya Baskar said on Monday.

The system had already been implemented in all government hospitals, Mr. Vijaya Baskar told reporters after inspecting the Srirangam Government Hospital here. The computerised system had done away with the earlier practice of issuing written slips to out-patients seeking treatment at the government hospitals, he said.

Complete data of out-patients, including the medicines prescribed and investigation tests done, would be stored in the HMIS, he said, adding that a dedicated pin number mentioned in the computerised receipt would be given to every patient under the system.

The pin number would enable the hospital to know the complete case history of the patients at the click of a mouse the next time of their visit to any government hospital located anywhere in the State, Mr. Vijaya Baskar said.

Stating that the HMIS had been functioning very effectively, Mr. Baskar said the system would soon be extended to government medical college hospitals in the State in phase- III. He said the system was implemented in the government hospitals of Pudukottai, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Theni and Kanyakumari in phase – I. Two hundred and sixty seven hospitals were covered under phase –II, he added. Accompanied by Collector Jayashree Muralidharan and Health Department officials, Mr. Vijaya Baskar inspected various blocks, operation theatre and pharmacy on Srirangam Government Hospital campus and ascertained information from the hospital doctors and paramedical staff.
