Supply of protected drinking water, sanitation and measures to prevent outbreak of diseases in the city came in for a review at a meeting conducted by P.Kannan, Additional Director (Malaria), Directorate of Public Health, and Corporation Commission V.P.Thandapani here on Tuesday.
Mr.Thandapani directed corporation engineers to ensure proper chlorination of drinking water supplied to residents. Currently, about 94 million litres a day (MLD) is supplied to residents through 65 overhead tanks. Engineers should ensure proper chlorination both at pumping stations and overhead tanks. At the ultimate stage, the water supplied to households should have a minimum chlorine concentration of 0.2 ppm and this should be ensured by the engineers of the respective areas.
He instructed officials to prevent accumulation of solid wastes in places of public congregation such as the Central and the Chathram Bus Stand and the markets. Anti-mosquito fogging and fumigation should be carried out . Officials should also prevent sale of fruits and other eatables under unhygienic conditions, especially in front of schools.
Eatables sold under such conditions should be seized. Surveillance on incidences of fever has been mounted . Addresses of people with fever and diarrhoea were being collected from hospitals and steps have been taken to improve sanitation in the respective places. All hotels have been instructed to ensure protected drinking water. Mr.Thandapani appealed to residents to desist from consuming eatables sold under unhygienic conditions. Mohan, deputy director of public health, S.Raja Mohamed, city engineer, S.Arunachalam, executive engineer, and N.Rajeswari, city health officer (in-charge) attended the meeting.
