Tension prevailed in coastal Mallipattinam village near Pattukottai following a group clash when Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Karuppu alias Muruganandam for Thanjavur Lok Sabha constituency was campaigning on Monday.

Four cars and six motorboats were damaged in the clash between a group of residents of the locality and BJP partymen who were on campaign. However, no one was injured.

According to police, Mr. Muruganandam kick-started his campaign on Bazaar Street in the morning hours. As he was approaching a road, a group of persons allegedly objected to his entry for campaigning.

All of a sudden, the two groups resorted to pelting of stones in which the front glass panes of Mr. Muruganandam's car were damaged. Police intervened and chased away both groups.

Recurrence

Nevertheless, the problem resurfaced later, when a group damaged a few cars and boats in the jetty. Fishing nets were also set on fire.

Superintendent of Police G. Dharmarajan and police officers reached the spot.

The situation is under control, police said.

Meanwhile, Mr. Muruganandam lodged a complaint with the Sethubavachathiram police stating that a group of persons prevented his campaign and attacked him and his supporters.

Police have registered a case and secured a few persons.
