Urging the State government to permit commissioning of the Kudankulam nuclear power plant and to accept its share of 1,000 MW, members of the district unit of All India Grill Employees Welfare Association presented a petition to the District Collector Jayashree Muralidharan on Monday.

The petition stated that there were 8,000 employees involved in (iron) grill making in about 1,000 units in the district and that power cut for four hours a day caused a collective loss of Rs.4 crore a month, besides causing joblessness.

The government should take immediate steps to stave off closure of small units, the petition said.
