Green Park project may be delayed further

Tiruchi Corporation to tap Tourism Department funds

August 11, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 09:02 am IST - TIRUCHI:

Green Park, one of the flagship projects of the Tiruchi City Corporation, is likely to delay further with the civic body deciding to tap the fund of Tourism Department to complete the project.

The park, started in 2013 with the public contribution of Tiruchi residents, was aimed at creating all modern recreational facilities, including videogames, cycle track, walking path, meditation halls and others.

To facilitate the creation of various facilities, the Tiruchi Corporation had allotted 22.50 acres of land at Panjapur on Tiruchi-Madurai National Highway. On behalf of the Corporation, 1432 tree saplings were planted on 3.5 acres of land. Similarly, 312 tree saplings were planted by those contributed to the project. Though it was projected as a possible theme park to the entertainment-starved people of Tiruchi, the project seems to be struck due to the financial crunch. Works such as creation of drinking water facilities, footpath, tree saplings and indoor stadium have been taken up. Similarly, a few more components like road formation, creation of sand pit, two wheeler road path, formation of paver blocks, installation of children play equipments, construction of entry gate, formation of fence and construction of toilets have been undertaken under the Tamil Nadu Urban Development Scheme and Self Sufficiency Scheme.

However, the components like construction of eateries and fruit stall, setting up of replicas of world wonders, parking lot, meditation hall, theme park, battery car and compound wall are yet to be undertaken.

Sources in the Tiruchi Corporation said that it had been decided to implement the project by seeking funds from the Tourism Department. A Detailed Project Report (DPR) would be prepared by releasing Expression of Interest. It would then be sent to the Commissioner of Municipal Administration for approval.
