The Golden Rock Railway Workshop (GOC) has been adjudged the best workshop in Southern Railway.

The GOC that overhauls diesel locomotives and coaches, and manufactures steam locomotives and wagons, also exports locomotives.

During 2011-12, the shop released 138 diesel locomotives from periodical overhauling against the target of 79 set by the Railway Board, besides overhauling 15 locomotives of public sector undertakings. It had also converted five metre gauge locomotives into broad gauge shunting locos under the rolling stock programme of Southern Railway, and had manufactured 298 wagons in the last financial year.

In recognition of this achievement, Chief Mechanical Engineer, Southern Railway, S.J. Sood, awarded a shield to the Golden Rock Railway Workshop, as part of the Railway Week celebrations on Friday. P. Mahesh, Chief Workshop Manager, received the shield.

According to a press release issued by the Golden Rock Railway Workshop, Mr. Sood honoured 121 employees.

Of them, 33 employees were from GOC shop and 14 from GOC shed. Of the rest, 11 belonged to Ernakulam Shed, 28 to Trivandrum Division, 17 to Tiruchi Division and 19 to Madurai Division.
