Construction of a new road over bridge (ROB) across the railway track at Periyar Nagar on Thiruvanaikovil Trunk Road in the city crossed a milestone with massive steel girders being placed in position for the bridge on the railway portion of the structure on Monday.

The process was expected to be completed in a few days. The bridge is being built by the Highways Department and the Rail Vikas Nigam Limited.

Sources in the Highways Department said the bridge would be completed before the end of March.

The project was sanctioned by the government in 2011 at an estimated ₹47 crore to replace the old narrow two-lane bridge, which has since been demolished. The bridge, will run for a distance of about 1,430 metre and have a width of 17.20 metre. About 14,000 square metres of land is to be acquired on both sides – towards Thiruvanaikovil and Mambazhasalai.
