German Bank-funded water scheme for extended areas

Residents of wards 61, 62, 63, 64 and 65 likely to get 135 litres of water per day per head

May 28, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 06:04 am IST - TIRUCHI:

The Tiruchirappali City Corporation (TCC) has decided to implement a water development scheme for the five new wards added to it a few years ago. The scheme will be implemented with the financial support of German Bank.

The Tamil Nadu Urban Development Fund (TNUDF), which studied the Detailed Project Report of the new water supply scheme for the wards 61,62,63,64 and 65, has accepted the proposal. The TNUDF, which has come out with a Financial Viability Report (FVR) for the project, has also communicated a new water tariff schedule to the Tiruchi Corporation in a letter dated May 20.

As per the FVR, the project will be implemented at a cost Rs.63.70 crore. Of this, the German Bank will provide loan to the tune of Rs. 25.48 (40 per cent of the project cost).

It will offer an equal sum as grant. The remaining Rs.12.74 crore (20 per cent) will be met through the own resources of the TCC.

A resolution passed at the urgent meeting of the Corporation Council held here on Wednesday said the scheme was aimed at providing 135 litres of drinking water per day per head to the residents of Tiruverumbur and its adjoining areas as per the norms stipulated by the Central Public Health and Environmental Engineering Organisation.

The residents of theses areas now get only 40 litres of water per day per head through the existing schemes of the Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board (TWAD).

The resolution further said the Tiruchi Corporation would allocate Rs.12.74 crore from its general funds for the project.

Though the councillors, cutting across party lines, agreed to the new water scheme, they strongly objected to the new tariff suggested by the Tamil Nadu Unban Development Fund (TNUDF), which, they said, would lead to increase in deposit and water charges.
