The Ariyamangalam police arrested a gang that was allegedly in possession of imitation gold pieces in the late hours of Friday here and seized the items from them.
A police team was checking the vehicles at Lakshmipuram bus stop along the Thanjavur Road when it stopped a car.
One of the occupants B. Usman escaped from the vehicle.
The police team found 400 grams of imitation gold in the size of tablets in possession of other occupants and held them.
During enquiry, it was found that the gang had purchased the imitation gold from a person in Bangalore and was planning to sell them to the people claiming that they were made of original gold.
The imitation pieces and the vehicle were seized.
Those arrested were M. Dheen Mohamed (26), T. Vinod Kumar (23), B. Sheik Abdullah (29), and M. Anandan alias Lakshmanan (23).
The main accused B. Usman (25) has been reported absconding.
The Ariyamangalam police have registered a case under IPC sections 420 (cheating) and 476 (possessing counterfeit marked material).
The arrested persons were remanded to judicial custody on Saturday.
