A five-member gang sped away with a hired car after pushing the tourist driver out of the car at Sethurapatti on the city’s outskirts on Monday.

According to police sources, three persons hired a car in Tiruppur on Monday saying that they were going for a function to be held at Viralimalai near Tiruchi. The vehicle was driven by V.Santhosh Anand. Upon reaching Chathram bus stand in the city, the trio had food and later two persons got into the car at TVS Tollgate area. Even as Santhosh Anand was driving the car near Sethurapatti, the gang threatened him with a knife, assaulted him, tied his hands and legs, pushed him out of the vehicle and sped away with the car.

The locals who noticed the driver alerted the police. The Manikandam police have registered a case under IPC section 392 (robbery) and are investigating.
