‘Ganesh Darshan’ draws devotees to Poompuhar

Lord Ganesha in different hues and shapes are making for a major draw at a special exhibition, ‘Ganesh Darshan’ currently on at Poompuhar, the Tamil Nadu Handicrafts Development Corporation’s showroom in the city.

Idols made of stones, vellerukku, sandal wood, white tree, marble and different metals, and paintings of the Lord are on display in different categories such as cloth print, silk print, velvet cloth. Idols of Lord Ganapathy made in different States have been the new arrivals this year, says R. Gangadevi, manager of the Poompuhar Showroom.

The price tag ranges between Rs. 150 and Rs.1.60 lakh. “Bronze idols of Lord Ganapathy made in Swamimalai are pricey, at Rs. 1.60 lakh,” she adds. The height of the idol is about 2.5 feet and has been designed in accordance with the ‘agama’ stipulations.

Glittering idols made of navarathna stones need special mention. Ganapathy idols made of clay have been an all time favourite among the devotees. These idols ranging in height from four inches to three feet have been the centre of attraction. Different forms of the Lord mounted on lion, (Simha Ganapathy), elephant (Gaja Ganapathy) and boat have also been displayed, says the manager. This apart, the idols made of paper mache has been in growing demand among the devotees.

Care is taken that the clay idols are environment friendly, suited for immersion and free from any chemicals and hazardous paints.

The exhibition, which signifies the Vinayaka Chathuthi festival, is open between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. on all days except Sundays till September 3.
