Modernisation of the Grand Anaicut Canal which is going on at a cost of Rs. 145 crore will be completed by March 2011, said M.K. Stalin, Deputy Chief Minister, at Madigai near here on Friday.

He saw the renovation works going on in the canal and said that the work has been funded by the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) and is implemented by the PWD. NABARD has given a sum of Rs. 269 crore for the entire Tiruchi zone to take up various infrastructure development works. Of this Rs. 145 crore has been allotted for modernisation of GA Canal.

When the work is completed, about 2.27 lakh acres of irrigation will be improved. Of the Rs. 145 crore, works to the tune of Rs. 51 crore have been taken up this year. The works include desilting, strengthening of bunds, cement slab lining, renovation of regulators ETC, Mr. Stalin said.

The GA Canal irrigates Orathanadu, Thanjavur, Pattukottai and Peravurani taluks in Thanjvur district and Aranthangi, Manamelkudi and Alangudi in Pudukottai district.

S.S. Palani Manickam, Union Minister of State for Finance, Ko. Si. Mani, State Cooperation Minister, M. S. Shanmugam, Collector, Moorthy, Chief Engineer, PWD, Tiruchi and others accompanied Mr. Stalin.
