Bharathidasan Institute of Management (BIM) has integrated environmental value addition into its presence on the premises of Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited, Tiruchi.

Faculty members and students joined hands at the start of this month to accord a head-start to their ‘Green Connect’ initiative executed by Welfarecomm, the students’ welfare committee, for making the college and hostel premises cleaner and greener. According to faculties the initiative helps significantly in spreading environmental awareness among the students.

Symbolically, both faculties and students dressed themselves in green and planted a number of saplings around the academic block, the computer centre and the hostel blocks in the presence of their Director N. Bala Bhaskar, on the first day.

On the next day, hostel rooms which consumed the least power were identified and rewarded. The Welfarecomm intends to carry out this exercise once every two months to encourage the inmates to reduce power consumption.

Additionally, a competition to identify the cleanest room was conducted to emphasise the importance of a clean environment and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

Future plans for Green Connect include tie-ups with BHEL to encourage waste segregation, organic waste composting, rain water harvesting measures and campaigns to save water among others.
