Public and devotees performed aarathis to Mother Cauvery, showered flowers and offered prayers to welcome the froth-filled fresh water waves that swept into the temple town on Monday.
Water released from Mettur Dam for the Maha Pushkaram event being celebrated in sacred places along the banks of the river is expected to reach Mayiladuthurai on Tuesday where the main event is being observed at the Cauvery Thula Kattam.
The 10,000 cusecs water released from Mettur Dam for the Pushkaram event reached Grand Anicut on Friday, where it was regulated and just over 4,000 cusecs was being let into the main Cauvery river and that waters reached Kumbakonam on Monday.
Hundreds of devotees, public and farmers gathered at the Mela Cauvery Padithurai, Chakra Padithurai, Bhagavath Padithurai and Dabeer Padithurai to offer milk, flowers and perform aarathis to welcome Mother Cauvery.
People also offered turmeric and kumkum to the river that is worshipped as a goddess that bestows bounties on farmers and people providing them livelihood resources.
Meanwhile, thousands of faithful continued to take holy dip in the bathing ghats of River Cauvery en route its course in the delta region as part of the ongoing Maha Pushkaram rituals.
The events that kicked off on September 12 would end on September 24.
Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami is expected to participate in the rituals on Wednesday.
At the Thula Kattam on Monday, Gho Pooja and Chandramouleeswarar Pooja were performed in the morning.
With the Mahalaya Amavasya slated to commence on Tuesday noon and last up to the next day afternoon, the authorities are expecting several thousand devotees from various parts of the State and neighbouring States as well.
The authorities have made arrangements to meet the increasing number of devotees.
