A day-long mega camp to screen children with heart ailments under the ‘Save the Heart’ project was held here on Sunday.

The programme was jointly organised by the Tiruchi City Police, Apollo Children Hospital, Chennai, Common Indians, Tiruppur, and Lions Clubs of Rock Town, Aristrocrat and Premier, Tiruchi.

Commissioner of Police A. Arun inaugurated the free medical camp held at the St. John’s Vestry Anglo Indian Higher Secondary School.

About 330 children, 178 of them afflicted with heart ailments, were screened by a team of doctors during the course of the camp.

The parents of the children were offered medical advice by Dr. Neville Solomon, Dr. Anuradha Sridhar and Dr. Muthukumar from the Apollo Children Hospital.

In all, 84 children were identified for heart surgery to be done at Apollo Children Hospital in Chennai, a police press release said.

The children would be sent to the hospital in batches on July 12 and 17 for higher treatment.
