The heavy spell of rainfall in Perambalur district over the past few days has resulted in many of the system tanks attaining full capacity.

One of the biggest tanks in the district at Arumbavur in Veppanthattai block has brimmed causing surplus flow into a nearby tank.

A PWD official said Arumbavur big tank that has a holding capacity of 52 million cubic feet has attained full capacity after a couple of years. Besides Arumbavur big tank, the Varagupady tank (15 million cubic feet), Vadakalur tank and the Arumbavur small tank have also reached its full capacity. Perambalur district has 73 tanks across various blocks.

Substantial increase in levels was also noticeable in six other irrigation tanks - Therani tank, Karai small tank, Kurumbalur tank, Keeravadi tank, Vengalam small tank and Elumur tank.

The official said eight other tanks had water to the extent of 50 to 75%. PWD authorities are hopeful that this would recharge the groundwater table.
