The Prison Department has plans to establish four more district jails in Tiruchi range in the near future.
As a precursor to its proposed move, the department has embarked on the task of identifying suitable site for setting up proposed district jails in four districts.
The proposed district jails would come up in Perambalur, Ariyalur, Karur, and Thanjavur districts, falling under the jurisdiction of Tiruchi range.
The department sources here said about 10 acres of land had been identified in Ariyalur district for this purpose.
The exercise of identifying suitable land for the construction of the district jails were under way at Perambalur, Thanjavur, and Karur districts, the sources added.
Once sanction for the new jails comes through, the number of district jails in the vast limits of Tiruchi range would increase to six. At present, district jails are functioning at Nagapattinam and Pudukottai in Tiruchi range which has a Central Prison, a Special Prison for Women and Borstal School in Pudukottai accommodating young offenders aged between 18 and 21. The sources said the proposed district jails would be built in such way to accommodate about 200 inmates.
The idea was to have in place a district jail in every district headquarters to accommodate prisoners in the respective district jails to avoid transportation from some other jail for legal proceedings, the sources added.
