Four members of a family including an eight-year-old girl and two women were killed and two others injured when the car in which they were travelling collided with another car at Parappuvayal in SP Pattinam police station limits at Thondi on Thursday. The police said R Mohammed Yusuf (38) was driving to his native Kottaipattinam from Thondi with his five family members when the accident occurred when he tried to overtake a vehicle and collided with an oncoming sports utility vehicle.

While Yusuf and a four-year-old child escaped with injuries, all the other four people in the car died on the spot. The deceased were identified as A Ayub Khan (65), R Jahirammal (70), O Saipunnisa (55) and M Sithin Nilofar (8) – Yusuf’s maternal uncle, mother, sister and daughter respectively.

Two men, who were travelling in the sports utility vehicle have absconded after the accident. The accident took place around 5 30 p.m. and the Thondi mobile patrol police reached the spot and carried out the rescue operation. The injured Yusuf and S Shabika, the four-year-old child, grand daughter of Saipunnisa were admitted to the Government Rajaji Hospital in Madurai, police said. The SP Pattinam police registered a case and investigating.
