The Crime Branch CID police, on Friday, arrested a retired sub-inspector of Police on the charge of registering a false case for a bogus insurance claim.

According to CB-CID police, A. K. Jayaraman, the then Sub-Inspector of Police, North Traffic Investigation Wing, Tiruchi City, prepared a false charge-sheet against the driver of a private bus in 2002. The charge pertained to ‘rash and negligent driving and causing grievous injury' to R.Sampath Kumar (43) of Woraiyur. Based on the investigation, Sampath kumar filed a claim for Rs.One lakh, before the Motor Accident Claim Tribunal from the Oriental Insurance Company.

However, M. Manickam, Divisional Manager of Oriental Insurance Company, Tiruchi, lodged a complaint with the Tiruchi City Crime Branch Police, stating the claim was false. In the meanwhile, Mr.Jayaraman retired from service in 2007.

Based on the directive from the High Court, Madras, the Crime Branch CID, Tiruchi, took up the investigation in March this year.

The CB-CID constituted a special team led by K. Paramashwara, Deputy Superintendent of Police and Abdul Azeez, Inspector of Police, which took up the investigation and found the insurance claim false. The CB-CID registered a case of cheating under Sec 420 of IPC against the former sub-inspector and Sampath Kumar, and they were produced before the Judicial Magistrate, Nagalakshmy.

The Magistrate remanded them to 15 days' judicial custody. The duo was lodged in the Central Prison here.
