The Department of Posts will open five more international mail and parcel booking counters in the State, according to M. Sampath, Chief Postmaster General, Tamil Nadu.
Speaking to reporters after inaugurating an international mail and parcel booking counter at the Head Post office here on Tuesday, he said similar centres had been opened at T. Nagar in Chennai and Coimbatore. It had been planned to open such counters in Madurai and Salem head post offices and three more places in Chennai soon. Besides handling international bookings, the counters would be used to book mails and parcels under the International Tracked Packet Service scheme to cater to the needs of e-commerce requirement among Asia Pacific countries including Australia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and Indonesia. Package weight up to 2 kg could be sent to Australia at just ₹375.
Mr. Sampath said speed post facility was available for over 100 countries. The posts were delivered between 5 and 7 days. The Department had fixed a revenue target of ₹600 crore towards speed parcel service to foreign countries. It had so far generated revenue to the tune of ₹270 crore. The target for Tamil Nadu would be ₹30 crore for six months from October to March.
