Ahead of the reopening of schools after summer vacation, an inter-departmental committee comprising officials of various departments checked 120 school vehicles here on Wednesday.

Vehicles of schools falling within the jurisdiction of Regional Transport Offices of Tiruchi East and Tiruchi West besides Unit Offices of Tiruverambur and Manapparai were checked by officials at the Armed Reserve ground in K.K. Nagar.

The committee constituted officials of Revenue, Transport, Police and Education departments.

Official sources said the panel members checked whether the steering linkages and braking system were working properly, prescribed measurement of the emergency exit doors and its usability, and whether the vehicles were fitted with fire extinguishers and first aid boxes, seating arrangements and the gangway. The sources said lapses were found in 11 vehicles following which notices were issued to the respective institution to which the vehicles belonged and fitness certificates were suspended.

The institutions were asked to rectify the lapses and bring the vehicles for re-inspection.

The suspension would be revoked once the lapses were rectified, the sources said. Minor defects were noticed in 50 vehicles, and the institutions concerned were instructed to rectify the defects and produce the vehicle for re-inspection on Thursday.
