Expressing stout opposition to the draft Draft Coastal Regulatory Zone (CRZ) 2010 notification, fishermen and fishing labourers association have announced that they would launch a nationwide agitation protesting against it on October 29.

Representatives of fishermen association and fishing labourers held a meeting at Nagapattinam on Thursday to discuss the draft CRZ notification published by the Union Government recently. Leaders of Vanga Kadal Meen Thozhilalar Sangam and Coastal Action Network also participated in the meeting.

Speaking at the meeting, Jesurethinam, convenor of Coastal Action Network pointed out that CRZ 2010, if implemented, will affect the livelihood of the fishermen. “CRZ 2010 is essentially the same as CRZ 2009, barring a few minor modifications,” she said.

At the meeting, it was decided to organise a nationwide protest on Oct 29 against the draft CRZ 2010.

The meeting also discussed the possible adverse impact on the environment due to the proposed thermal power plants in coastal areas of Nagapattinam district.
