Fishermen of Jegadapattinam, Kottaipattinam, Meemisal and Kattumavadi in the district resorted to an indefinite strike on Wednesday, protesting the arrest of 18 fishermen by the Sri Lankan Naval personnel on Monday night.
About 3,000 fishermen struck work, affecting the fishing operation in the coastal villages in the district. The export-oriented crab processing units at Meemisal were hard hit following the stir.
The president of the Jegadapattinam Fishermen Welfare Association, G. Ramakrishnan, said the State and Central governments should immediately intervene in the issue and take steps for the release of the fishermen. The boats by which these fishermen had ventured into sea should also be returned in tact, he added.
