The Fire and Rescue Services Department conducted a mock emergency drill at the Sri Ramakrishna Gurukulam Home for Children campus in Tirupparaithurai near here recently to create awareness among students about safety and the ways to put out fire.

A team of fire commandos from the Tiruchi Fire Division under the leadership of the Divisional Fire Officer (in-charge), Tiruchi, T. Padmakumar, carried out the drill, lasting over two hours, during which they demonstrated different methods to extinguish fire and the ways to rescue people during emergencies such as floods and fire.

The fire-fighters explained to the students the role and objectives of the Fire and Rescue Services Department; different causes of fire accidents; immediate measures to be undertaken during such emergencies; various methods to put out fire; the ways to escape and rescue people.

They also explained to the students about the ways to act during floods; importance and use of life jacket and life buoy during such crisis situations.

Techniques

The students were taught basic techniques to put out fire and the precautionary measures to be taken to prevent fire accidents.

As part of rescue training, the students were taught the ways to lift and carry people affected during floods and the ways to use life jackets and life buoys.

Twin objectives

A senior Fire and Rescue Services Department official here said the exercise was carried out with twin objectives of creating awareness among students regarding safety and fire prevention besides training them to act in times of emergencies.

The drill was carried out on the instruction of the Director General of Police / Director, Fire and Rescue Services, Tamil Nadu, R. Nataraj. Similar drills had been conducted by the fire fighters in certain city schools last year, the official said.
