Considering heavy public movements in and around Main Guard Gate, the city’s business hub dotted with commercial establishments, Fire and Rescue Services Department has proposed to set up a new fire station there to act swiftly in times of emergencies.

A proposal justifying the rationale behind establishing a fire station within the main commercial area has been forwarded to the department higher-ups in Chennai for approval.

Town hall identified

Fire fighters have identified the town hall for the proposed fire station to cover areas situated in that vicinity. A fire tender required for the new station has been sought under the Central government scheme.

The city’s business nerve centre is dotted with multi-storey buildings, shopping complexes, theatres, hotels, government and private offices, medium and small scale units, petrol stations, and a wholesale vegetable market at Gandhi Market.

The department has forwarded separate proposal seeking sanction for establishing a fire station near Samayapuram Arulmigu Mariamman Temple and at Manachanallur.

Eight fire stations

Presently, Tiruchi Fire Division accounts for eight fire stations in Tiruchi, Srirangam, Lalgudi, Pullambadi, Manapparai, Navalpattu, Thuvarankurichi, and Uppiliapuram.

Year 2013 saw as many as 1,026 fire calls reported in the eight fire stations. A majority of them were received by Tiruchi fire station.
