A fire broke out in the Indian Oil Corporation’s (IOC) divisional office here on Friday destroying articles inside. There was no casualty or injury.
The fire broke out on the second floor of a multi-storied commercial building, situated on Sastri Road, housing two IOC offices – one meant for the LPG section and the other for petrol pumps.
On getting a call in the afternoon, a team of fire fighters reached the spot. It took them nearly five hours to bring the fire under control.
In addition to deploying four fire tenders and an emergency rescue tender, water lorries were arranged from the corporation to augment water supply for the fire fighting operation.
As the building had only a single entry and exit, fire fighters climbed up the ladder to break the outer glass panes of the second floor and inserted the hose for pumping water inside.
In the melee, a fire fighter sustained minor bruise in the right shoulder.
Although thick smoke engulfed the third floor, there was no fire inside that portion, a senior Fire and Rescue Services department official said.
Heavy smoke billowed out from the second and third floors of the building atop which fire fighters got themselves positioned to carry out the operation.
Electricity supply was cut to enable fire fighters do their job and Sastri Road was closed for vehicular traffic for a few hours in the evening.
Files, computers, work cabins, and false ceiling inside the second floor were destroyed in the fire, a senior department official said.
Fire fighters believe that electrical short circuit could have caused the fire which was put out at around 7 p.m. However, the exact cause of fire was still under investigation, the official said.
