Fire breaks out at Ariyamangalam dump again

After a gap of about two months, fire broke out yet again on Saturday at the Tiruchi Corporation's garbage dump at Ariyamangalam.

The fire that was noticed on a mound of garbage at the east end of the dump in the afternoon spread to neighbouring mounds. The area was soon engulfed with a dense cloud of white smoke.

On information, Corporation officials rushed to the spot and diverted eight tanker lorries to put out hte fire. Similarly, fire tenders from Tiruchi, Srirangam and Navalpattu also rushed to the dump yard to bring the fire under control. A thick blanket of smoke has shrouded many parts of Ariyamangalam.

After about two hours of fire fighting operation, the fire was brought under control.

“The fire has been put out. Fire tenders will continue to work for a few more hours to control the smoke,” a Corporation officer said.
