Fire and Rescue Services Department in Tiruchi, Karur, Thanjavur, Pudukottai and Perambalur districts received 55 calls from the public seeking their assistance on Wednesday.

However, these were all “small fires” with no injuries to any one.

Fire fighters said the total number of calls received in Tiruchi district, with eight fire stations, was 21 including 12 calls in Tiruchi fire station limits and six calls in the jurisdiction of Srirangam fire station.

The fire accidents were caused by firing of rockets and bursting of crackers. Thatched sheds put up atop concrete structures, cow sheds and a godown containing raw materials meant for erecting ‘pandal’ were among those which caught fire.

Fire fighters said the number of fire calls received in Tiruchi fire station this year was less as compared to the previous year.

Teams of fire fighters with vehicles equipped with necessary paraphernalia were deployed at vantage spots within the city, said a senior officer.

The number of fire calls received in Thanjavur district was 14 including four in Thanjavur and five in Kumbakonam.

Karur district witnessed 10 fire accidents of which eight were in Karur and two in Musiri and Pugalur fire station limits.

The number of fire calls in Pudukottai district this year was nine and one in Perambalur district.
