It is essential for the student community to know about road safety as it is connected to law and order and general administration of the country, Commissioner of Police Shailesh Kumar Yadav said on Tuesday.
Education relating to road safety should be driven home to the students from the education institution level, Mr. Shailesh Kumar Yadav said inaugurating a training programme on traffic awareness for NSS volunteers and NCC cadets of various colleges affiliated to Bharathidasan University here.
The programme was organised by the city police.
He said fatalities on roads had reduced within the city limits by 20 per cent owing to adherence to road rules and enforcement of traffic rules. Earlier, the Commissioner released a booklet on road safety signage and signs on the occasion.
The Vice Chancellor, Bharathidasan University, K. Meena, said the training programme was only the beginning organised as part of an effort to create awareness of road rules and safety .
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime & Traffic) S. Selvakumar, principal, Jamal Mohamed College, R. Khader Mohideen, Bharathidasan University NSS coordinator L. Ganesan, and police officers participated.
Sessions on causes of accidents, road safety rules and causes, and prevention of deaths in road accidents were organised as part of the programme.
