Farmers want irrigation tanks desilted

Farmers from villages around Tiruverumbur and members of the Tamil Nadu Vigasayigal Sangam, affiliated to the Communist Party of India, staged a demonstration near Periyakulam Tank on the Kallanai Road near Tiruverumbur in the city on Saturday demanding steps to desilt irrigation tanks and eviction of encroachments on them.

The agitators were demanding clearing of silt from the Koothaipar Periyakulam, removal of encroachments and repair of sluices.

They also demanded steps to renovate the Uyyakondan canal, Killi Vaical and Kuvalai Vaical.

Getting adequate water for samba cultivation in the Cauvery river, steps to prevent the raising of the height of the check dam across Palar and waiver of cooperative crop loans of all farmers were among their other demands.

Ayilai Sivasuriyan, district secretary of the Tamil Nadu Vivasayigal Sangam, and farmers participated in the agitation.
