A group of farmers of Kallanai Kalvai Ayacut, living by the motto self-help is the best help, dredged a supply channel for a length of three km to irrigate standing ‘samba’ crop.
The farmers contributed their mite and raised funds for dredging the supply channel to channelize water from Nemilikadu to Aththani. Although the Public Works Department, during the course of renovation of the supply channel about six months ago, had executed works on clearing the silt and weeds on the supply channels in the Kallanai Kalvaai, the stretch between Nemilikadu and Aththani had been omitted.
S.Ramasamy, president, Kallanai Kalvai Ayacutdar Welfare Association, said that with a view to saving the standing ‘samba’ crop, a meeting of farmers of these villages was convened recently when the farmers decided to dredge the channel without waiting for government’s action. The thick vegetation and the huge deposit of silt on the stretch had choked water supply.
He said that about 700 acres would get an assured supply in Aththani, Chellapillayarkovil, Karupattikadu, and Kuppathevan villages.
