Representatives of various farmers’ organisations and political parties participated in a protest demonstration organised in the city by Cauvery Urimai Meetpu Kuzhu (Cauvery Rights Retrieval Committee) to press the Centre to set up the Cauvery Management Board at the earliest.
The committee urged the State government to convene an all-party meeting to discuss the issue and lead an all-party delegation from the State to meet Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to press the constitution of the management board.
Speakers at the meeting criticised the Karnataka government for failing to abide by the final award of the Cauvery Tribunal and the Union government as well for its failure to constitute the Cauvery Management Board to implement the award.
The Centre had been a turning a blind eye to the high handed actions of the Karnataka, they alleged.
A. Malarmannan, district secretary, Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, presided over the demonstration held near the Anna Statue in Chinthamani. T. Bhanumathi, coordinator, Makkal Urimai Peravai, inaugurated the protest.
Indirajit, district secretary, Communist Party of India, Siva Suriyan, district secretary, Tamil Nadu Vivasayigal Sangam, R. Raja Chidambaram, State Secretary, Tamizhaga Vivasayigal Sangam, P. Ayyakannu, State vice-president, and Bharathiya Kisan Sangh participated.
