The resumption of rain, after a let up for a couple of days, has triggered apprehensions over fresh inundation of crops in Tiruchi district.
Most parts of the district received widespread rain since Tuesday night. While the rain was moderate to heavy on Wednesday morning, it came down to a steady drizzle by afternoon disrupting normal life to a certain extent. Low-lying stretches in some of the arterial roads were inundated in the morning due to the overnight rain. The district administration had declared a holiday for schools.
The rain compounded the woes of residents in low lying areas which were already water logged following the heavy rain over the weekend. Residents in low-lying colonies were keeping their fingers crossed as continued rain could trigger flooding.
The inundation in residential colonies around Karumandapam, parts of Srinivasa Nagar and a few other places in the city were yet to recede fully.
Farmers in the district, who were pinning theirs hopes on a good samba yield this year, were worried over possible inundation of fields. The Agriculture Department was conducting an enumeration to assess the extent crop damages owing to the inundation of fields caused by last week's rain.
The continued rain could aggravate the situation, a cross-section of farmers representatives felt.
The Public Works Department continued to divert the entire rain flow into the Coleroon River from the Upper Anicut near Tiruchi in view of the heavy rain in the delta districts.
On Wednesday about 9,870 cusecs of water was let out into the Coleroon River from Upper Anicut. There was substantial flow of rain water in the Uyyakondan and Kudamuritti rivers, flowing across the city.
Navalur Kottapattu recorded the maximum rainfall of 28.30 mm of rainfall during the 24-hour period ending at 8.30 a.m. on Wednesday.
The following were the chief amounts of rainfall recorded in other parts of the district during the same period (in mm): Tiruchi Town 26.80, Nandhiyar Head 23, Golden Rock 22, Kallakudi 20.20, Pullampadi 18.60, Tiruchi Junction 17.60, Thuvakudi 16.80, Lalgudi 15.60, Marungapuri 15.40, Tiruchi Airport 15.30, Thuraiyur 14, Sirugudi 9. The district received an average of 12.27 mm of rainfall during the period.
