'Experience America' from today

The U.S. Consulate General, Chennai, will start here on Wednesday its three-day ‘Experience America' programme encompassing exhibition, film festival, quiz, elocution, workshops, lectures and discussions.

The programme will provide to students and parents details on higher education opportunities in the U.S., and assistance with visa inquiries, besides featuring discussions about Indo-US business and technology partnerships.

Director of Indian Institute of Management, Tiruchi, Prafulla Agnihotri will inaugurate the programme at the Bishop Heber College Auditorium in the presence of the Principal Manoharan, the Consular Officer of U.S. Consulate. Brykyta Shelton, and the Information Officer, Anand Krishna.

A speech competition on the theme: Indo-U.S. Relations will be one of the defining partnerships of the 21st Century' will follow the inaugural session, at the multi-purpose main auditorium. Simultaneously, a presentation on ‘using social media to get a job' will be made by Asha Beh at the College's AC Seminar Hall. From 11.00 a.m. to 12.30 p.m., there will be a discussion on Entrepreneurship based on the e-journal USA: Entrepreneurs: The Next Generation.

Another discussion on ‘Educating Women and Children' based on the e-Journal, USA: Educating Women and Girls, will take place between 3.00 and 4.30 p.m. at Bharathidasan University. At 11.00 a.m. on all the three days, the USIEF (United States-India Educational Foundation) will make a presentation on ‘Higher Education in the United States' at the MBA Hall where it has put up a stall. There will also be Consular presentation on student visas. The same presentation will be made at the NIT-T at 4.15 p.m. on Thursday and at Jamal Mohamed College at 3.30 p.m. on Friday.

Bishop Heber College A/C Auditorium will be the venue for English Language Teaching Workshop at 10.00 a.m. for college and school teachers on Thursday and Friday respectively.

The College will also host a documentary screening on environment at 10.30 a.m. on Thursday and presentations on online databases at the same time on Friday. A video screening and discussion on American History (10.30 a.m.) and American Poetry Reading (11.30 a.m.) will take place at the Jamal Mohamed College on Thursday.

At 3.00 p.m. on the three days the following Oscar winning American films will be screened at the Holy Cross College A/C Auditorium respectively: ‘Up', ‘The Blind Side', and ‘Julie and Julia'. The College will also host a presentation on Fulbright Fellowship opportunities at 11.00 a.m. on Friday.

The other events include a talk by Foreign Commercial Officer James Golsen at the Bharathidasan Institute of Management at 11.15 a.m., and a programme on Indo-US business relations co-sponsored by Rotary International and CII at Breeze Hotel at 5.30 p.m. on Thursday; Info USA Quiz for School at Campion School at 9.30 a.m. on Friday; and a panel discussion on Indo-US Relations at St. Joseph's College (SAIL Hall) at 3.00 p.m. on Thursday.

The ‘Experience America' programme will culminate with a concert led by Amercian Lyricist and Musician Carrie Newcomer to the accompaniment of piano by Gary Walters and drums by Jim Brock at Crystal Hall in Breeze Hotel at 6.00 p.m.
