As part of the ongoing 10-day training programme on safety and disaster management for railway officers, an exhibition displaying various equipment utilised during rescue operations was organised at the Zonal Railway Training Institute here on Saturday.
The gadgets showcased at the expo fell under four categories – CSSR (collapsed structure search equipment); flood rescue; medical first responder and those used during nuclear, biological and chemical disasters.
On display were the advanced victim location gadget equipped with camera and monitors to trace victims caught under debris, chain saws to cut concrete structures, angle cutter to cut iron rods, circular saw to chop heavy wood, air bag to lift heavy bogie, rubber boat that can accommodate eight to 10 persons to transport people from water-logged areas, radiation monitoring equipment to detect radiation and spreader and cutter.
The exhibition was jointly organised by the 4 Battalion National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) Central Industrial Security Force, Arakkonam and Railways.
Personnel of the NDRF explained the salient features of the rescue equipment and its functioning to the railway officers and general public.
Shivajee Singh, Inspector General of Police (retd), Border Security Force and Senior Specialist, National Disaster Management Authority and S.A. Abdul Rahman, Additional Divisional Railway Manager, Tiruchi Division, also visited the exhibition.
The objective of organising the expo was to sensitise the railway officers taking part in the training programme to the latest gadgets available for rescue operations and to enable them to know about NDRF and its functioning, a senior railway official here said.
