Enforce autorickshaw meter rule: consumer body

May 02, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:53 am IST - TIRUCHI:

The Consumer Protection Council, Tamil Nadu, has urged the district authorities to implement the meter fare system for autorickshaws in city.

In a resolution adopted at its annual general body meeting here recently, the council said that unruly elements and mafia controlling the autorickshaws should be weeded out.

The council requested the Department of Posts to take steps to retain the Teppakulam Post Office at the existing building and modernise it. The building, more than 100 years old, is a heritage structure and a prominent landmark in the city, it said.

Through another resolution, the council requested Reserve Bank of India to issue 50 paise, Re. 1, Rs. 2, and Rs. 5 coins in a manner that was easily distinguishable.

At present, 50 paise and Re. 1 coin are of same size and shape. Another variation of Re. 1 coin was similar to Rs. 2 coin. This causes difficulties in distinguishing the coins, especially for the aged. The coins should be issued in different sizes and shapes, it suggested.

It called upon the Southern Railway and the State government to expedite the work on construction of the bridges at Odathurai Road and near the Railway Junction and the widening of the Thiruvanaikovil road over bridge.

C.T .Selvakumar presided over the meeting and S. Pushpavanam, Secretary, read out a report.

The following were unanimously elected office bearers of the council for 2015-17: C.T. Selvakumar (president), M.G. Mehboob (vice-president), S. Pushpavanam (secretary), Mohamed Isaque (treasurer).

The following have been elected to the Executive Committee: K. Sekar, K. Lakshmanan, S. Sridar, Baby Durairaj, Pon. Gunaseelan, Ghouse Baig, Ambrose, Govindasamy, and C. Balasubramanian.

RBI urged to issue new coins of 50 paise, Re. 1, Rs. 2 and Rs. 5 denominations
