The Tiruchi Corporation on Wednesday took up an encroachment eviction drive in the city’s main commercial areas, including NSB Road and Big Bazaar Street.

Unauthorised structures put up by over 200 shopkeepers were removed during the drive carried out with heavy police security.

Corporation officials, led by Isakimuthu, Assistant Commissioner, Srirangam, Sivagurunathan, Executive Engineer, and P.Sivapatham, Assistant Executive Engineer (Planning), launched the operation in the morning that went on till evening.

Encroachments along NSB Road, Theradi Veedhi and Big Bazaar Street were removed. Corporation sources said about 150 unauthorised structures were removed in these places.

Later, Corporation officials removed about 50 unauthorised structures put up by shopkeepers in Chathram Bus Stand area.

The drive, taken up after a long time, comes in the wake of instructions from the Collector K. S. Palanisamy at the Road Safety Council meetings asking the civic body officials to take up periodic drives to remove encroachments, sources said.
