The Highways Department on Wednesday carried out an encroachment eviction drive at Karumandapam along the city stretch of the Tiruchi-Dindigul Highway.

A large number of men and machines were deployed for the eviction drive carried out with police protection.

Temporary structures put up by many shopkeepers were removed. Many traders, who had extended their shops, removed the encroachments by themselves.

The Tiruchi Corporation and Highways department tok up the eviction drive in various parts of the city, including Srirangam and Central Bus Stand, over the past few days.

A senior official of Tiruchi Corporation said the drive was being carried out based on repeated representations made by the public. Encroachments on bus routes and thickly populated commercial streets had been removed. The drive would continue for a few more days, the official added.
