Distribution of prizes, scholarships and welfare assistance to school students marked the Children’s Day Celebrations organised by the Department of School Education in the city on Saturday.
A sum of Rs. 19.50 lakh under the Accident Insurance Scheme was distributed as welfare assistance to a total number of 39 boys and girls, studying in government and aided schools in the district, who had lost either their father or mother in an accident and to the permanently disabled students on the occasion.
Prizes and certificates were distributed to over 200 high and higher secondary school students belonging to Backward, Most Backward, Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe communities for having topped in the Government Examinations in 2008-09.
Certificates were given to 74 higher secondary and 152 high schools in the district which achieved pass percentage of over 90 per cent. Demand draft for Rs. 1.42 lakh was given to 52 HIV/AIDS-affected children in the group 5 to 18 towards their educational expenses. The State Transport Minister K.N. Nehru and State Forest Minister N. Selvaraj distributed the prizes and welfare assistance to the students.
Speaking on the occasion, Forest Minister N. Selvaraj exhorted the student community to plant and maintain saplings either in their respective educational institutions or in their homes to protect our environment.
Transport Minister K.N. Nehru said Activity Based Learning methodology had been implemented in schools for easier understanding of subjects.
Collector T. Soundiah said the State government had been implementing various welfare schemes including free cycles and free uniforms distribution and stipend for girl students keeping in mind their welfare and to ensure their education.
The Chief Educational Officer K. Swaminathan, Mayor S. Sujatha and Educational Department officials took part in the function.
