Elephant to be shifted out of temple

Authorities of the Sugavaneswarar Temple have decided to shift the temple elephant Rajeswari to a more spacious place in Azhagapurampudur in the city.

Experts have started imparting training to the elephant in climbing a lorry to enable its transportation on Tuesday. Thirty eight-year-old Rajeswari has a swollen leg, which affected its movement. Due to this, the elephant was not taken out any where for quite some time.

A shed has been constructed in Azhagapurampudur for the elephant, in the site owned by the temple. As the elephant was not in a position to climb the lorry, the authorities decided to impart training to it with the help of experts. As such, a 4.5 feet pit was dug on the temple premises and the lorry was parked in the pit. The elephant was trained in getting into the lorry. Temple sources said that the training will be continued for another few days, before transporting the animal to its new abode.
