Education loan melas being organised by the district administration in association with banks have proved to be a hit, with a large number of students thronging the second round of the camp held on Saturday.

The melas are being organised over the past few years to receive and process applications from students under a single roof. Saturday’s camp at the Collector’s Office was meant for students from Veppanthattai and Alathur taluks and Arumbavur and Poolampadi town panchayat limits in the district. As many as 341 students submitted their applications seeking education loans for pursuing higher education at the camp, Collector K. Nandakumar said. Of these, 13 students had sought loan for pursuing medicine and 188 for engineering and other technology-related courses. Officials from 29 branches of 11 banks participated in the loan mela and received applications from students.

The first round of the camp meant for two other taluks and two town panchayats was held on July 30 and about 426 students had applied for the loans, Mr. Nandakumar said. Another camp would be held on August 20 for the benefit of students who were not able to participate in the first two camps, he added.

Candidates who wish to apply for education loans from all parts of the district can participate in the camp along with their relevant certificates. Application forms have been made available at all panchayat union offices and the District Rural Development Agency. Applications can also be downloaded from the website: www.perambalur.nic.in
