Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), Tiruchi, despatched for export its first consignment of environmental-friendly boiler components for two utility size 135 MW Circulating Fluidised Bed Combustion (CFBC) boilers to Koniambo Nickel in the South Pacific island of New Caledonia, on Friday.

This export signifies a major breakthrough for BHEL in its drive to enter new markets worldwide with its range of environment-friendly CFBC boilers, a press release said.

The consignment of about 40 metric tons of steel columns was flagged off by Jude Adhipan, Koniambo Project Manager, in the presence of A.V. Krishnan, Executive Director, BHEL, Tiruchi Complex, and senior officials consisting of Project Inspector K. Nataraja and general managers.

BHEL will be despatching a total of 14,000 metric tons of components for each of the two boilers against the export contract from New Caledonia, a French colony near Australia. The CFBC boilers have been designed by BHEL to ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers) standards and are compliant with European Community standards. BHEL has specially designed these boilers in modules that have been optimised to reduce the number of weld joints that have to be carried out at the project site.

It will result in faster project commissioning.

For the first time, BHEL Tiruchirappalli will be shipping the boiler components through the new Karaikal Port to significantly reduce transport costs and transit time.

Special seaworthy painting and packaging have also been done for the consignment, the release said.

M. Karunakara Reddy, General Manager/FBC & HRSG; CS Ramachandran, General Manager/Commercial & Marketing/Fossil Boilers; K Ramachandran, General Manager/Planning & Development; Mr S Gopinath, General Manager/Operations/Boiler Shops, and other senior officials took part.
