Almost a month has passed since the road on Kannadasan Salai in Anna Nagar was dug up so as to lay new road. Yet there is no sign of a new road and residents have a harrowing time navigating the uneven road. The digging up process by the earthmovers had broken up the top layer of the old road making it difficult for the motorists to ride on.

Kannadasan Salai is not the only stretch, where road laying works are pending. Work on few other roads, which were part of the ₹12 crore road development scheme of the Tiruchi City Corporation, are also pending, though the works on arterial roads have been completed.

“We somehow manage to drive carefully by negotiating on the uneven road. After the road was dug up for relaying it has remained unattended. The sharp edged blue metal and broken surface pieces of the old road have been testing our patience. They are puncturing the wheels of two-wheelers and cars,” said B. Ibrahim, an autorikshaw driver on Kannadasan Salai at Anna Nagar in Thennur.

Another resident said that there were incidents of motorists falling off from the vehicles due to the uneven rippled surface.

It is said that a section of residents, who had been demanding the Tiruchi City Corporation to construct a drainage along a side of Kannadasan Salai for long, had expressed their reservation regarding laying of the road before constructing drainage. They also staged a protest a few days ago to construct drainage in the area for smooth flow of domestic sewage.

Impressing upon the immediate need for resuming the uncompleted road work, the residents said that the Corporation authorities should also simultaneously construct a drainage. Otherwise, sewage being let out by residents of some of the slum colonies in Anna Nagar would damage the new road.
